Give Them Their Flowers Now (#RRBC)

red-roses-in-vase-2

Many, many, many (many) years ago, there was a gospel song that I loved by the Rev. James Cleveland that said “Give me my flowers… right now. If you feel like I deserve anything, don’t wait ’til I’m dead and gone.  If I’ve been nice to you or done something to make you happy along the way, then give me my few  lil’ flowers now, so I can see the beauty that they bring.”

This song came to mind after I received an email this morning from one of my dear friends and fellow member of the RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB.  Since this message was sent to me privately, I will not disclose who this member is, but because it was so beautiful and touched my heart so tremendously, I feel that I would be selfish to keep it all to myself.  (I have removed the name and other identifying info from this email, but if the party who gifted me with this treasure wishes to identify her/himself, please feel free to do so).

“Hi, Nonnie…I’m incredibly behind on everything, including my correspondence.  But I want to thank you for selecting my book for a seat in the #RRBC house.  It was such a surprise to open my mail & see that.  I was thrilled!  Also, I just saw today that my book was on your review page.  That was another surprise, and totally made my day.  I knew, of course, that you had read and reviewed the story, but I didn’t know that it had made it to your actual review page.  So now I can post your SEAL OF APPROVAL for my book on my own site.  Nonnie, I can’t begin to tell you what it means to me that you like my work.  It’s funny, but as I edit, I find myself asking “What would Nonnie do?” when I have a question about something.  I don’t think you realize the impact that you have on those of us who are trying to produce the best work possible.  Your presence in my life is a gift, and I don’t think I tell you enough how much you are appreciated.  *Hugs*”

To the wonderful soul who gifted me with this amazing present this morning, THANK YOU for giving me my flowers now…while I’m still alive to enjoy the beauty that they  bring.  The sunshine in my heart and the smile on my face, are reflective of my immense enjoyment of their beauty.

So many of you send me similar kind messages, and so much so, that I have had to create a FEEL GOOD FILE to store all your precious words of gratitude.  This THANK YOU is for all of you who have gifted me in this most precious way.

Many of you know that after our dear, sweet KATHRYN C. TREAT passed away, we named many of our programs, etc. in her name and in her honor.  There is a very special IN MEMORY OF…page on our site for her, our VIP Lounge is now named after her, and our treasure chest filled with our book giveaways is also named in her honor.

I wish that we had given Kathryn all these flowers while she was still here to enjoy their beauty, but I truly believe that she has a much better view of them from where she sits now.  Because of the beautiful legacy of love, kindness and support that Kathryn left behind, I will no longer wait to “gift” our deserving members with the flowers they so richly deserve, so that they may enjoy them while they are still here.

For this very reason, on yesterday, Saturday, Oct. 15, we changed the name of our TOP REVIEWER Award.  It is now The JOY NWOSU LO-BAMIJOKO “TOP REVIEWER” Award!  For those of you who are wondering why this award has been named in her honor, well, Joy was the first member of our club to purchase/read/review over 100+ books!  And, she did it in record time!  Joy, we hope you will enjoy these flowers while you are still here, because your legacy will also be a great one and one that we will never forget!

As I wrap this up, I ask that if you have someone in your life or someone that you appreciate immensely for just being them, show your gratitude by gifting them with their flowers today. Don’t wait until they’re dead and in some cold grave. Those flowers could come in the form of a phone call, an ecard, an email, or even a little text message.  These cost you nothing.  I assure you they’ll derive more pleasure from them now than they could ever get from them sitting atop a casket in a sad funeral home.

Do you have someone that you need to give flowers to today?  If so, share it with us in the comments section below.

Well, this story is giving us something to think about today. In my first book I alluded to the fact that I gave my godmother real roses while she was alive to enjoy them, to thank her for what her being in my life meant to me. Thank you Nonnie for sharing this and reminding us of life’s little pleasures.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us all, Non. I thank God every day that I am blessed to have such a wonderful virtual family in RRBC. I am beyond grateful for the friendships I have created. Words, like the ones expressed today, are exactly the reason for my gratitude.

  9. Dear Nonnie,
That note was a beautiful tribute to you and you naming an award after Joy was such a fitting tribute to her. This is so representative of what you have made Rave Reviews Book Club stand for. Nodding my head now that this is all good.

  14. Nonnie, your blog today made my day. Like many here I know what it’s like to hear a child call out, ‘Bye Mom’ and never hear her speak again. My beloved mom-in-law is 100 years old and I call her each day because the day will come when I call and she is gone. My words and love are flowers to her as she is mildly demented. Our lives are so busy that it’s often hard to remember to give those we love ‘flowers’ in whatever form makes them happy. Yet taking just a few moments can mean so much to them and to us when they are no longer among us. Thank you for reminding us of this simple act of love and kindness worth so much when shared with others.

    • This moved me to tears, Micki. I lost my beloved ‘Mother-in-Law several years back. It was such an incredibly sad time. She had advanced Alzheimer’s and had no idea who we were. I’m just so pleased that I had told her how I felt about her almost every day when she could keep it as a memory. xo

  15. Life is full of wonderful gifts every minute of every day. We just do not pay attention to them…every butterfly, bird, person, sunshine, smiles, and on and on. Two dear friends recently died from cancer and I am blessed I was able to kiss them on the cheek, hold their hand, and listened to whatever they had to say. Those were my “gifts of flowers” to them and I am blessed to also be getting those “gifts of flowers” now as I walk the path of cancer again.
Wonderful post, Nonnie and I am so glad you have shared it with all of us.

  18. Such a lovely post, Nonnie! This generosity of spirit is so inspiring, and it brings an instant smile. After my mom passed away suddenly 19 years ago, I never lose sight of these precious moments filled with grace and kindness. They truly are gifts for the soul. Thanks for sharing this with us. 🙂

  19. Oh my goodness, Nonnie! I’m writing this little note while wiping away a few tears, remembering with much fondness loved ones who are no longer with us. And yes, it is comforting to know that I gave my dear mother-in-law a large bouquet of flowers the evening before we left for the UK. She asked the nurse to call me back. She said, ‘Don’t forget I love you very much, Maretha!’ Am I glad I went to see her despite having serious difficulties with the car whilst travelling from Botswana! I never saw her alive again. She died on the 16th of August. We received the news as we boarded the plane in Manchester en route to Johannesburg.
Life is short and your post reminded me to give flowers now to those people in my life who makes life worthwhile, giving added pushes to get out of bed despite aches and pains. Since I’ve joined Raves Review Book Club, I’m slowly finding my feet in a foreign country, because now I don’t feel alone – I just have to go online to read an encouraging line or two from many of our dear members.
Thanks for writing this by way of reminder. Kind regards.

      • Thanks Nonnie! Perhaps you know that ‘Nonna’ is the Italian word for grandmother and if I give it a touch of endearment via Afrikaans by adding’ie’ – Nonnie, it means dear grandmother, which describes to me what you are to many of us, though I suspect I’m quite a few years older! 😚🌹🍁🌺💐🍂🌸🍁🌷🤓

  21. Thank you so much Nonnie. I still have not come down from the cloud seven where I found myself yesterday. It will take some time before I will find my feet on solid ground again. Whenever anyone asks me to sign my book for them, I always end it with these words: TO GOD BE THE GLORY! I want to do the same here with you. TO GOD BE THE GLORY! For what He has used you to do for me. I will thank you in public, and will also thank you in private. Please, be assured that I too will never forget this. So now, like your mystery RRBC member, who sent you that jewel of a note of gratitude, I will not only have this honor displayed on my blog site, my web site, but will also wear it on my lapel. It is a great honor! Thank you.
