Welcome to Day 1 of the REIMAGINING NEON Blog Tour, to reintroduce THE NEON HOUSES by Author, Linda C. Mims!  I am so excited to kick off the first leg of this tour, not because I get to showcase the beautifully designed book cover that was done by 4WillsPublishing, but because Linda is writing again, even re-releasing her first book!  Yayyyy, Linda!

Along this stop, Linda is refreshing our memory of her first release, THE NEON HOUSES, and explaining some of the changes we will find in this re-release.  She doesn’t stop there, though!  Linda has an earful to share with us and we’re all excited to listen in.

Linda, the floor is yours!

The name of my Blog Tour is Reimagining Neon for two reasons. Reimagining gives us the opportunity to reflect, wonder, and explore. Over the next few days, I’ll share with you what I came up with while reimagining the story of the Neon Houses. The second reason the tour is called Reimagining Neon is because re-reading this first book in the series instructed how I recreated the illusions in the next “neon” installment. I already have pages of mysticism, stunning feats, and lore waiting in the wings.

A Few Things Have Changed

If some of you are familiar with the story, only a few things have changed, and nothing that alters the story or its ultimate outcome. One character got a name change because his name was too similar to a family member’s name. Other family wanted to know why I chose him instead of them.

I’d considered changing the name long before this, and since my family member had never read the book, and didn’t care one way or the other, the decision was easy. What concerned me more was what old readers would think. However, since the book never received over 20 reviews, I don’t think too many readers will care either.

The name change wasn’t the only alteration. I toned down one of my character’s descriptions because life has taught me people with unattractive features can be good, and beautiful people can be quite ugly. Consequently, this character didn’t need to be a caricature. The most important change is that the book reads smoother, thanks to my new beta readers and my editor.

A Big Hand Here for Editors

I had great beta-readers. Then I sent it for a professional edit. Wow! Just wow! The editor found plenty of things that made the book read better. Little things like how to turn a phrase or why repetitive words in a paragraph should be deleted made a difference. I cringe, thinking that editor may be reading this entry and itching to take out the red pen.

Noel didn’t have any trouble parking in her husband’s underground parking space when she arrived at city hall that afternoon. Somehow, Dickey had shamed Brittany and Harlan into meeting them for drinks that evening.

She waved to the garage attendants on her way out and headed around the building. Wham! The hustle and bustle of the crazy city blew her away. Cars flew in the air and drove along the street, the jostling and maneuvering of the people hurrying past made her giddy. Coming from days spent in Gang Territory, Noel wasn’t used to this.

Intoxicating smells permeated the air from the café next door to Dickey’s building, and Noel debated going inside. The golden glow of Tiffany lamps beckoned her in for a cup of coffee and one of the delicious looking sticky buns that was whispering her name. A slight hum of her communicator indicated Dickey’s number, so she gave the pastries a pass and opened the door to city hall.

She wasn’t late, but maybe something had changed. Dickey, Scott Baker, Declan Daniels, and a man she knew from screen telecasts as Lord Nelson were in an animated discussion in the mayor’s hallway.

“Be with you in a minute, babe,” Dickey called.

Scott glanced over, saw her, and lifted a hand. He guided the men into his office, but left the door open, and Noel stood close enough to listen.

“Are you ready to sit down with my business partners?” Lord Nelson asked. “Plans for a space center near Gang Territory are on the table.”

“That idea’s been circulating for years,” Scott said.

“Well, it’s time the idea took root.”

“I never expected this day to happen during my tenure,” the mayor said.

“What will happen to The Southland? Gang Territory?” Dickey asked.

“We have a plan for GT,” Lord Nelson said.

“Really? What is that?” Dickey asked.

“If I told you, I’d have to kill you.” Lord Nelson laughed.

“Let’s not keep secrets, Nelson. If we go in together, this plan is going to be shared and agreed on,” Scott said.

“I don’t mind telling you. I’ve sent along some ideas that will be beneficial for some. Freight and passenger revenue should be very attractive. What attracts you, Baker?”

Noel held her breath as she waited for the mayor’s response, but Declan Daniels spoiled the moment. He peeked into the hallway, smiled at Noel, and closed the door.

What would you do if you were the daughter of a cult hero who boasted a past full of exciting, colorful exploits?

Suppose the thing that made your mother a cult hero was also inside you.

Now, imagine spending your whole life trying to hide it—until you shared the heart stopping death of someone close to you.

Supposed that death brought you face to face with the gift of the neon houses.

New Chicago and its neighboring town, The Southland, are vastly different worlds in circa 2087, but Dr. Noel Kennedy is an expert at navigating both worlds. As the Deputy Chief of Schools in The Southland, Noel has perfected being a solid, middle-class citizen. Not even her husband, Fredrick Kennedy, truly understands what she is.

When Zarah Fisher, Noel’s young protégé, is murdered on a deserted street in The Southland, Noel knows the exact moment Zarah takes her last breath. Though miles away, Noel feels the girl’s terror, and hears her anguished screams inside her own head because of an inheritance that has left her with extraordinary gifts.

Can Noel find justice for Zarah without risking it all?

Murder, mayhem, and suspense abound in this action packed page-turner. More than a mystery, The Neon Houses thrills the reader with scenes of a futuristic 2087. Autoplanes, body planes, and flying buses are the norm. Robots and androids cook, clean, and serve the affluent, while dystopia lurks just around the corner.

  8. I’m honored to be here and to spend the first day of the Reimagining Neon Tour with you and your readers. I’m indebted to you and Rave Reviews Book Club for me even having a completed novel. Six years ago, RRBC was holding a book conference and I wanted to be in it. Work on The Neon Houses began then, and I finished in time to be featured at the conference. Thanks for the push! Also, you and 4Wills designed the heck out of the book cover! Thank You!🤗
