Today I’m celebrating…

AUTHOR, SHIRLEY HARRIS-SLAUGHTER

NJ:  Hi, Shirley, thanks for joining me today!  First, a few questions to warm the atmosphere and for us to learn some things we probably don’t know about you.  I’m short on time and I’m sure you are, too, so let’s make this a quick one.  First question… when is your birthday?

Shirley:   November 28

NJ:  If you have siblings, which child are you (first, second, third, etc.)?

Shirley:  Second

NJ:  When did you begin writing?

Shirley:  Adult

NJ:  Why did you begin writing?

Shirley:  Trying to address issues.

NJ:  Please put these in order of importance to you: Faith, Family, Friends, Loyalty, Honesty

Shirley:  (1) Faith, (2) Family, (3) Honesty, (4) Friends, (5) Loyalty

NJ:  What is the one thing people who really know you might say about you to a stranger?

Shirley:  Trustworthy

NJ:  In three paragraphs or less, if you could, how would you change the world?

Shirley:  You have to start out with a vision. I would start by praying. It is powerful! You can’t do anything without a relationship with God. Then I would lead by example. You must show people that you are willing to do the work. They will follow you. You must have a strong presence or have the ability to persuade. If you are lacking, then you find somebody who does have it and use them. Use all the resources you have available to you to get the job done.

NJ:  Describe yourself in ONE word.

Shirley:  Bubbly!

NJ:  THREE words that others might use to describe you.

Shirley:  Funny, frank and honest.

NJ:  What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Shirley:  A confident woman. A woman with no hair.

NJ:  Three women who you admire – famous or otherwise.

Shirley:  Nonnie Jules, Meghan Markle and Kim Procter. What do you admire most about them? Nonnie is a smart and trustworthy friend who had a vision and acted on it. MM is a fighter. She saved her prince and didn’t allow anyone to take her down. Kim Procter is a doer and leader in the KPC Catholic Organization; all while raising 3 beautiful children right by her side.

NJ:  What is the legacy you’d like to leave behind?

Shirley:  You can have marriage and a career and purpose in your life.

NJ:  What contributions, if any, have you made to society?

Shirley:  Writing a book to remember our legacy.

NJ:  If at all, how has belonging to RRBC helped you as a writer?

Shirley:  Being a member of RRBC has made me aware of problem areas in my writing which has been limiting my writing ability.

NJ:  What has belonging to RRBC brought to your life?

Shirley:  It has put me in the company of Ms. Nonnie Jules who is a wonderful human being. I have met other good people who have been supportive of my works. It is a very supportive community which you can’t find anywhere else.

NJ:  Shirley, I am honored to know you.  Please accept these flowers from my heart to yours.

  1. Hi, Shirley. Our Lady of Victory was among the first books I read through Rave Reviews and it is certainly a book to rave about–it opened my eyes to the plight of the Aftican American in cities and other communities across the US. Your research, writing and persistence show us how important it is to seek the truth and tell it like it is. 💞 Thanks so much for your continued dedication as A Woman of Excellence! It is a pleasure and privilege to be part of Rave Reivews and to get to know you even better thanks to Nonnie’s interview. .

Hi Bette! I’m so glad you took the time to read OLV and got an understanding of what has been going on. Man’s indifference to mankind creates these discrepancies. Now they’re trying to keep us in the dark under the guise of eliminating “Critical Race Theory” which is merely trying to address these discrepancies. Thank you so much for your support and it’s good you are here adding your voice to the conversation.

  2. Hi Shirley–Our lady of Victory was the first RRBC book I read when I first joined. I related so much to the subject since the Albany Diocese in Albany, NY closed the church I’d been a member of for 25 years so that they could sell it to a theatre group. I made an immediate connection with you through that book and I vowed that I will get to meet you one day! My daughter is in the process of moving closer to where you live, so that WILL happen! Can’t wait! So glad to learn even more about you from your profile. Indeed a woman of excellence!

  5. This was an excellent idea, Nonnie, to honor women in our organization as the exemplary women they are. Congratulations, Shirley. I’m proud of the work you do for RRBC, your writing standards, and I especially like that short Afro you carry off so well!❤️

Well, Linda, this will probably be the last post showing off my longer locks. The short Afro style is here to stay. I’m never going back … maybe??? Thank you for stopping over. I always enjoy seeing you around.

  6. Shirley, when I saw the word “bubbly” I immediately had a vision of the cork blowing off from a bottle of champaign and the liquid overflowing – actually, it’s your enthusiasm overflowing the vessel and leaving behind that bubbly effervescence that is enjoyed by all. It’s an honor and pleasure to know you…it doesn’t matter that you’re a neighbor…I like you…for you! Thanks, Nonnie, that also goes for you!

Hi John. The nicest people come out of Michigan, and you always say the nicest things. So, you know that you are one of my favorites; and one of the most supportive members in the club. I hope your wife is getting better and that nothing but good things happen to you going forward. Thank you so much for your kind words.

I am madly in love with Shirley’s trailer and not because 4WillsPub created it, but, the images tug at my heart each time I see the trailer; it’s one of my favorites. When Shirley submitted those photos, that script immediately formed in my head on its own.

      Thanks, Shirley!

Yes Pat, it’s so nice learning about everyone. We are more than just the books we write or read. I’m glad you enjoyed reading OLV, and the trailer was nice. And to think I didn’t like it at first. How was that even possible? LOL! Thank you for always lifting me up.

Yes, Shirley is funny (without even trying to be); she is extremely frank and honest, two of the qualities I love most about her. Some can’t handle her direct nature or her truths, but I admire them greatly! Her passion about the things that she believes in, is something that we should also point out here as it’s a huge part of who she is.

After I read the interview, her short story, “Newspaper Chronicles,” came to my mind. Her bubbly personality and dedication to her job really came through in the story.
